Support for Students

• Students are expected to use reasonable care of the device they are borrowing.
• Do not write on or customize your laptop with stickers, markers, paint, or pen.  Chromebooks that are damaged due to customization may result in the replacement of the part, at the families expense.
• Fees may be charged to the family if the chromebook has been misused, lost, or if the chromebook has not been returned after the loan period has ended.
• All repairs are to be performed by HUSD personnel, and not by a third party contractor.
• The borrower agrees that the computer is on loan, and belongs to the HUSD.  The chromebook is not to be assigned, sold, transferred, or disposed off during the loan period.
• The device and its settings are not be changed or altered.  This includes adding/removing software, or circumventing a devices restriction policies.
• The HUSD reserves the right to request the chromebook be returned to the school for any reason deemed necessary.

Chromebooks are intended for use at school, and are a requirement at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. 

• Unless otherwise stated, ALL students are required to come to school daily with a working chromebook, a power adapter, and have it fully charged at the start of the school day.
• If a student has left their chromebook at home, they are still responsible for work assigned in class.  If a loaner is available, students may check one out from their teacher.  Devices checked out by the teacher are NOT to leave the classroom, or to be taken home under any circumstances.  If a student repeatedly leaves their chromebook at home or fails to charge their chromebook, violations will be handled by the classroom teacher or school administrator.

We recommend that families purchase the following items for their child:

• A pair of wired earbuds, for activities that require listening.
• Optionally, we suggest purchasing a powerbank, which can be used to keep your child's device charged.

The process for reporting a chromebook stolen outside of school are as follows:

• Step 1: Family submits a police report to the school principal;
• Step 2: A new device will be re-issued at no charge;
• Step 3: Until a police report is received the student will receive a loaner device, that will be returned to the school daily.

The process for reporting a chromebook lost at school are as follows:

• Step 1: Teacher/Student must submit a written report to the school principal.
• Step 2: Student will check out a loaner, and return daily;
• Step 3: If the device cannot be tracked, the family is responsible for paying a replacement fee.

The District shall be responsible for repairing or replacing a device due to normal "wear and tear".  If it is determined that a device is damaged due to negligence or intentional vandalism, the student's family will be responsible for covering the repair/replacement of the device.

Device Obligations and Charges

• Minimal Damage (cracked screen, keyboard missing keys) = $50/per incident
• Major Damage (broken body, screen removed) = $150
• Replacement Charger = $25
• Clean up Fee = $25 (removal of stickers, markers, decorations, etc...)

In cases where financial hardship has been determined, HUSD will work with families to find a payment/reimbursement solution.
