Introduction Letter from the Principal
Dear Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School Community,
I am honored to be writing to you today as the new Principal of Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle
School. Over the past week, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the staff, student, and
parent members of the King family. I couldn’t be more excited to become a King Cobra and serve
as your new principal. In every conversation, pride in the staff and admiration for the students
has shone through. It is evident that I join a tight knit community with a rich and proud tradition
of inclusive instruction focused as much on building character as honing intelligence. I look
forward to learning as much as possible about King by actively observing and listening.
Moreover, I look forward to working with the King family to transform Martin Luther King, Jr.
Middle School from good to great.
I have been in education since 1990 when I began serving as a high school history teacher at
Menlo-Atherton High School. I have accumulated 22 years of teaching experience and 7 years of
administrative experience at various schools across the US and overseas. This move to King, in a
way, is a homecoming. I first discovered that I wanted to pursue a career in education when I
mentored middle school students from East Palo Alto during my undergraduate years. I deeply
appreciated the fact that the students I had the privilege to learn from and teach boldly
questioned everything and didn’t take anything at face value. I see these traits in my daughter
who starts middle school (6th grade) the same week that school begins at King. Middle School is
such an important part of a student’s life because for most, it is where they begin to form their
own values and beliefs and develop a sense of self. I’m excited to be a part of this journey at King.
I look forward to having a wonderful school year!
Respectfully,
Darrell Daniels
Message from the Assistant Principal
I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School! It is truly an honor to join a school with such a rich legacy of academic excellence, student leadership, and commitment to equity. I bring with me over a decade of experience in education, having worked with students across the K–12 continuum. While I’ve taught at all grade levels—including adult education—my heart has always been in middle school. I spent the majority of my teaching career as a middle school Language Arts teacher, and those years shaped my deep appreciation for this unique and powerful stage in a young person’s life. I believe schools should be places where students are not only challenged academically, but also seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are.
Most recently, I served as Assistant Principal at Glassbrook Elementary and as a Youth Intervention Specialist at Lorin Eden Elementary, where I supported students with both academic growth and social-emotional wellness. My leadership is grounded in empathy, relational trust, and collaboration. I believe that when families, students, and educators work together, we create inclusive, joyful, and supportive school environments. At MLK, I look forward to building strong relationships and supporting student success through restorative practices, instructional coaching, and a deep commitment to equity.
As an immigrant, multilingual, and first-generation college graduate, I understand the power of education and the dreams families carry for their children. My personal experiences inspire me to ensure that every student has access to high-quality learning, meaningful relationships, and opportunities to thrive—regardless of their background or previous experiences. I’m also proud to share that I’m a Hayward resident and the parent of two children who attend HUSD. My husband and I are deeply invested in our local schools as parents and neighbors. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially outdoors in nature. These moments help me stay grounded and connected to what matters most.
In my first few weeks, I’ll be launching a “listening and learning” campaign to connect with students, staff, and families. I want to hear directly from you—what makes MLK special, what your hopes are for the year ahead, and how I can best support our community. I’ll be a visible presence on campus, and I invite you to stop by, say hello, and share your thoughts with me. I can’t wait to meet you—whether it’s in the hallway, at drop-off, during events, or at family gatherings. Thank you for welcoming me to this incredible community. I’m truly excited for the school year ahead and feel honored to serve the students and families of MLK Middle School.
Warmly,
Meera Singh
